If my family has taught me one thing, its unconditional love. The type of love that just pours out of your heart because you just love the person so much. I was watching Set It Up, the new rom-com on Netflix (definitely recommend) and at one point they say “I like because… I love despite”. This got me thinking, no matter how insane or crazy my family is, I love them. Despite the fact that they drive me absolutely insane, and sometimes make me want to move halfway across the world, I still love them to bits.
We are a dysfunctional mess who will use any excuse to get together and eat. We are loud, we yell, we eat too much, we cook enough food for an army, we dance and sing, we laugh and cry, we literally are our own community.
But when things get tough, I know they will still be there. Because being born into this family comes with this attachment, that no matter what you do we will always be there to love you, support you and feed you.
My family is divided into many generations, with mixed backgrounds, with so many different characters and personalities and yes that clashes a lot. But at the end of the day, we are family.
Need to hide a dead body? We got you. (I’m kidding!!)
Need to feed 40 people in three hours? We got you.
Need a random excuse to get out of the house? Well just stop on over because someone is bound to be home and will serve you coffee within 5 seconds of you being in the house.
My family is loud, crazy, energetic, dysfunctional, loving, supportive, compassionate and amazing. Its times like these I realize just how lucky and privileged I am to have people in my life that will always be there at the end of the day.
I understand that not everyone has this type of family, but sometimes the family that means the most to us can be friends, colleagues or distant relatives. Family is family.
Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!
